Why trips disappoint: the hype, the crowds and the weather
Most vacation regret comes down to one thing: the trip didn't live up to the hype. We read 593 first-person verdicts in public forum posts. Of the 76 negative or mixed ones that carried a US signal, "overrated" was the top complaint, ahead of crowds and then weather. The answer isn't to skip Las Vegas, Cancún or Orlando. It's to go in the right month, know the catch before you book, and know the total before you go.
Overhyped is the top reason a trip disappoints
Of the 76 US negative or mixed verdicts we read, 53 were negative and 23 were mixed. The top reason was some version of overrated, overhyped or not as advertised: 18 mentions across 6 threads. Across all 269 negative verdicts, with or without a US marker, it came up 106 times. That's a reading of public forum posts, not a survey, and one 333-comment thread about the most overrated and underrated Walt Disney World resort pushes the count up.
The pattern is the same everywhere. People don't regret a trip that was average. They regret a trip they expected a lot from. Vegas, Disney and the famous restaurant on the famous island all come with big expectations, so they're the easiest places to feel let down.
Now Vegas is overpriced, over hyped experience.
Crowds and lines come second, and the month sets them
Crowds and lines came next: 10 mentions across 10 threads in the US verdicts, and 23 across all the negative ones. Most of those posts were about theme parks, where one closed ride and a park full of day guests can wipe out an evening you paid extra for.
Orlando shows how much the month matters. July is among the most crowded and expensive months of the year there, for airfare and for on-property resort rooms, with tropical heat, packed lines and lightning delays on top. September has the shortest ride lines of the year and the lowest hotel rates outside Labor Day weekend, but it's also peak hurricane season. Orlando's best months on our list are November, February, January, April and October.
It wasn’t worth it in our opinion as Test Track was closed most of the night and Guardians was clogged with day guests for the entire night
Weather is third, and it's the one you can check
Weather came third: 6 mentions across 4 threads in the US verdicts, and 8 across all the negative ones. It's a smaller number, but it's the reason you can see coming. A rainy day on the one stop you came for, or a gondola that stops running in a storm, can make the whole trip feel off.
Before you pay for a room, check the weather for your dates, not the yearly average. A hurricane-season deal can be worth it for you, but only if you knew about the hurricanes when you booked.
I had an interior cabin for Alaska and 100% regret it. Our glacier Bay day was rainy and freezing.
Las Vegas: October is the month, and you pay for it
Las Vegas, the place one poster called over hyped, really does change from month to month. October is its top month on our list: desert weather you can enjoy outside, autumn casino displays and Halloween nightlife. The heads-up is that it's very busy, with steep hotel rates on every weekend because of conventions, festivals and the good temperatures.
July is the opposite. Outdoor exploring stops, and you're left with casinos, indoor dining and crowded pool decks. If you do go then, skip Red Rock hikes after 9 AM. After October, the best months on our list are April, May, March and November.
Cancún: October rains, November is on the list
Cancún in September is the peak of rainy and hurricane season, and it's the slowest month of the year, when resorts sit mostly empty. October is still inside hurricane season with heavy rain, though late October brings resort discounts. If you go then, pick a large full-service resort with indoor lounges, a spa and covered spaces in case the rain keeps you inside.
November is on Cancún's best-months list, along with February, January, December and April. Here's what we found on Oct 15, 2026: Honolulu to Cancún for Nov 14–23, 2026, nine nights, came to $3,181 for two, all-in. That's $1,867 in flights for two plus $1,092 at Aloft by Marriott Cancun. Prices change, and the booking site's checkout is the one that counts.
New Orleans for a long weekend: what we found
A short trip leaves less room for regret, because there's less time for a rainy day or a long line to take over. On Oct 15, 2026 we found Atlanta to New Orleans for Oct 23–25, 2026 at $1,076 for two, all-in for two nights. That's $414 in flights for two plus $575 at Hilton Garden Inn New Orleans Convention Center.
From Buffalo, Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026 came to $1,471 for two: $790 in flights for two and $590 at Le Meridien New Orleans. That covers Halloween weekend, so plan around a busy town. Both totals are what we found on that date, not a promise.
Fees annoy people but rarely sink a trip
Hidden fees and tips show up in the posts more as an irritant than as the reason a trip wasn't worth it. Only one US verdict named fees as the reason, and four did across all the negative ones. "Nickel and dimed" appears 5 times, 4 of them in US posts.
Our totals include taxes and the resort fee the hotel collects at the desk when the booking site lists one. They leave out a checked bag, seat picks on basic fares, food, transfers and tickets. Budget for those separately so the extras don't come as a surprise.
We stayed at an all inclusive and when registering for the cabana they said the tip is not included. For what.. handing me towels?
The catch
Picking the right month usually costs more. October in Las Vegas brings steep weekend hotel rates, and Cancún's best months come after its quietest, lowest-priced stretch. If budget matters most to you, the low-season deal can still be worth it, but you're trading the price for rain, heat or hurricane risk, so buy insurance that covers storms. Our totals also leave out bags, seats, food and tickets.
What to do
- Decide what the trip is for, like a family park trip, a beach week or a long weekend for the two of you, before you pick the place.
- Check the destination's best months and the weather for your exact dates, not the yearly average.
- If you're going in hurricane season, buy travel insurance that covers storm interruptions and read the hotel's cancellation policy.
- Compare the full total for two, flights plus hotel plus the resort fee, rather than a single fare.
- Add the checked bag, seat picks, food and transfers yourself, because they aren't in the total.
- For theme parks, plan an indoor midday break and a backup in case a ride closes or a storm rolls in.
