Long weekends from Chicago: three days, nonstop, no PTO

A long weekend from Chicago is worth it for the two of you when the flight is nonstop, it leaves at a sensible hour and the place is close enough that you get real days there. Nashville, New Orleans and Miami fit that best. Cancún and Toronto work too if your passports are ready, and Denver is the pick for winter powder. When we checked on Oct 15, 2026, our two-night Nashville trip came to $903 for two, all-in, and a two-night New Orleans trip came to $1,471 for two.

Nonstop or nothing when you only have three days

With about eleven paid days off a year for the typical American worker, a long weekend is the trip that doesn't touch your vacation days. That only works if the travel doesn't eat the weekend. A stop can cost you most of a day each way, and on a three-day trip that's a big share of your time.

So we start from four rules. Fly nonstop. Pick a departure time that doesn't mean a 4 AM alarm or landing after dinner. Choose a place within reach of Chicago. Count the full days you actually get on the ground, not the dates on the ticket. A Friday evening flight out and a Monday afternoon flight home usually gives you two full days and two half days, and that's a real getaway.

Two nights in Nashville came to $903 for two

We don't have a Chicago trip page priced for this guide yet, so here's what we found from other cities on Oct 15, 2026, to give you a feel for the totals. Each one is flights for two with taxes and fees, plus the hotel for the whole stay with taxes, plus any resort fee the hotel collects at the desk.

Nashville, Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026, from Miami: $903 for two, with $604 in flights for two and $262 for two nights at the Holiday Inn Nashville Airport by IHG. New Orleans, the same dates, from Buffalo: $1,471 for two, with $790 in flights and $590 at Le Meridien New Orleans. Miami, Nov 19–23, 2026, from Cincinnati: $1,200 for two, four nights at citizenM Miami South Beach.

Your fares from Chicago will be different, and prices change by the hour. The booking site's checkout is the number that counts. What carries over is the shape of it: on a short trip, the hotel is often a big part of the bill, so a well-placed room matters as much as the fare.

Thanksgiving gives you four days at the year's peak prices

Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov 26, and the window runs Nov 25–29, 2026. That's a four-day escape without using PTO, but airfares and hotel rates hit their annual peak. With six weeks to go, nonstop seats are the thing to lock in first.

Two moves help. Fly out early on Thanksgiving morning, when planes tend to be quieter than on Wednesday. Or pick a place with real holiday dining so you're not hunting for an open restaurant. For a sense of the price over the holiday, our Miami trip from Houston for Nov 27–Dec 1, 2026, came to $1,004 for two, four nights at Casablanca Residences Miami Beach, found on Oct 15, 2026.

MLK weekend is the long weekend that isn't a price peak

Here are the 2027 long weekends and how they price. MLK weekend, Jan 15–18, 2027, is not a peak: it's a good time to chase powder in Denver or fly toward 80°F sunshine in Miami or Cancún. Presidents' Day weekend, Feb 12–15, 2027, is a peak for both ski towns and beach resorts, so book the nonstop early or pick a city like New Orleans instead.

Memorial Day weekend, May 28–31, 2027, and Labor Day weekend, Sep 3–6, 2027, aren't flagged as peaks in our data, but flights and beach rentals still carry holiday surcharges, and nearly everyone has that Monday off. Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend, Oct 8–11, 2027, is fall foliage season, and rooms and rental cars go early. The cheaper days are the shoulder days around each holiday, so leaving Thursday night or coming home Tuesday can lower the total.

Cancún and Toronto need a passport and a little more planning

Mexico and Canada are where Americans go most when they leave the US, and from Chicago both work for three days. Cancún gives you the warm water in winter, and Toronto gives you a big-city weekend with good food and neighborhoods you can walk. The heads-up is the passport for each of you, and a little extra time at the airport on the way back.

Cancún is better with a fourth night if you can get it. Our nine-night Cancún trip from Honolulu came to $3,181 for two, which is a different trip entirely. On a long weekend, stay near the beach you want so you aren't spending a half day on transfers.

if you want a week in warmth on an ocean with decent food and a nice room, do it. We had no regrets.

The checked bag and the ride from the airport aren't in the total

Our totals don't include a checked bag, seat picks on basic fares, food, transfers or tickets. On a long weekend, a carry-on each usually does the job. If you do check a bag, the first one, one way, per person, is $35 on Delta, Southwest and Alaska, $40 on American and United, $45 on JetBlue, and $60 on Spirit and Frontier.

A low fare on a carrier that charges $60 a bag can end up costing more than a higher fare that doesn't. Compare after bags, not before. The same goes for the airport ride: a booked transfer costs more than a shuttle, but on a short trip the time it saves is often what you're paying for.

It was $100 bucks round trip to the hotel and zero stress and zero wait. Little expensive, maybe but 100% worth it.

Most American vacations stay close to home, and that's fine

About 80% of vacationers plan domestic trips, and 61% won't drive more than about five hours without stopping at a hotel. That's the case for a short nonstop: it gets you farther than a drive does, with less of the weekend spent getting there.

Plenty of people feel the trips they see online are out of reach. A long weekend from Chicago doesn't have to look like that. Two nights in a well-reviewed hotel near the music, the food or the beach, with a nonstop on both ends, is a real trip at a total you can see before you go.

Those are luxury-trip numbers, not average-trip numbers. Social media makes them seem common, but for most Americans they definitely are not.

The catch

The long weekends that don't use PTO are the same ones everyone else has, so the nonstop seats and the well-placed hotels go first and cost more, especially at Thanksgiving and on Presidents' Day. Stick to nonstops and you'll have fewer flights and times to pick from, and sometimes a higher fare than a trip with a stop. Our totals also leave out bags, food and transfers, and the totals in this guide are from other cities, not Chicago.

What to do

  • Pick the weekend first, and check whether it's a price peak like Thanksgiving or Presidents' Day.
  • Look for nonstops from Chicago that leave at a sensible hour and give you at least two full days there.
  • Add up flights for two, the hotel for every night with taxes, and any resort fee, and look at the total.
  • Add the bag fee for your airline if you can't travel with carry-ons.
  • For Cancún or Toronto, check that both passports are valid before you pay for anything.
  • Choose a hotel near what you came for, so you don't spend the short trip on transfers.

Protect the three days: a nonstop, a sensible departure time, a place within reach, and the total for two before you go. Tell us what the trip is for and when, and we'll pick the one that's worth it for you, show why, name the catch and give you the total before you go.
