Long weekends from Los Angeles: three days, nonstop, no PTO
A long weekend from Los Angeles is worth it for the two of you when you fly nonstop, leave at a sensible hour and know the total before you go. The clearest one we found is Las Vegas, Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026: $697 for two all-in, flights plus two nights at Harrah's, found on Oct 15, 2026. To skip using PTO, plan around the holiday weekends. Thanksgiving runs Nov 25–29 and MLK weekend runs Jan 15–18, 2027.
Las Vegas came to $697 for two for Oct 30–Nov 1
We found this one on Oct 15, 2026: Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Friday, Oct 30 to Sunday, Nov 1, two nights. Flights for two came to $440 with taxes and fees. The hotel, Harrah's Las Vegas, came to $230 for the stay. The $697 total for two also covers the resort fee the hotel collects at the desk, so you won't get a surprise at check-in.
It's not in the total: a checked bag, seat picks on basic fares, food, shows and rides to the Strip. Prices change, and the booking site's checkout is the price that counts. Before you pay, make sure the flight you pick is the nonstop and that it leaves at a time that gets you a real Friday evening there.
Vegas is one of the top places Americans booked for 2026, but people don't all agree on it. If you'd rather spend the weekend outside than in a casino, one of the drives or beach trips below will suit you better.
Now Vegas is overpriced, over hyped experience.
Holiday weekends are how you skip the PTO
The typical American worker gets about eleven paid days off a year, so a weekend that comes with a day off already built in is worth planning around. Here are the next ones: Thanksgiving, Nov 25–29, 2026. MLK weekend, Jan 15–18, 2027. Presidents' Day weekend, Feb 12–15, 2027. Memorial Day weekend, May 28–31, 2027. Labor Day weekend, Sep 3–6, 2027. Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend, Oct 8–11, 2027.
Here's the trade-off. Our data marks Thanksgiving and Presidents' Day as price peaks for both flights and hotels. Labor Day's own note says to expect peak flight pricing and packed resort towns unless you book months ahead. MLK weekend isn't marked as a peak, and it's a good time to head for 80°F sun without spending vacation days. The days just before and after a peak are usually where the lower prices are.
San Diego and Palm Springs work by car or by plane
Most Americans drive. Somewhere between 64% and 71% plan to drive on their next vacation, and 61% won't drive more than about five hours without stopping at a hotel. From Los Angeles, San Diego and Palm Springs both fall inside that limit, so you can leave Friday after work and skip the airport.
These two pages were priced from Denver, so the airfare doesn't apply to you. The hotel numbers still give you an idea of the cost. Two nights at the Hilton Garden Inn San Diego Mission Valley/Stadium, Oct 23–25, 2026, came to $373 for two. Two nights at the L3 Oasis Hotel in Palm Springs, Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026, came to $375 for two. We found both on Oct 15, 2026. If you drive, your total is the hotel plus gas and parking.
Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta mean a passport and a transfer
In winter, Americans tend to head for the Caribbean and Mexico. From Los Angeles, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta are the Mexico options that can work over three days. You'll need a passport, so check the expiration date before you look at fares.
We priced Los Cabos from Albany for a full week, Nov 14–21, 2026: $2,257 for two, with seven nights at Lumina at Cardinal Cabo San Lucas for $687 of that. It isn't a long-weekend price from LA, but it shows the hotel side can be reasonable. Over a short stay, the ride from the airport to the hotel matters more than you'd think, and travelers say paying for a private transfer is worth it.
It was $100 bucks round trip to the hotel and zero stress and zero wait. Little expensive, maybe but 100% worth it.
Banff came to $1,164 for two over three nights
For a cold-weather weekend, we found Los Angeles to Banff and Lake Louise for Dec 11–14, 2026, three nights. Flights for two came to $525 and The Juniper Hotel & Bistro came to $572, for $1,164 for two all-in, found on Oct 15, 2026. That's the only Canada trip in our data that leaves from Los Angeles.
Vancouver is the other Canada pick on this page. We don't have a priced trip for it yet, so we can't give you a total. Like Mexico, it needs a passport, and with only three days, a nonstop matters even more.
The checked bag isn't in the total
Every total above covers flights and hotel, including taxes and any desk resort fee. A checked bag is extra. Here's the first checked bag, one way, per person: $35 on Southwest, Alaska and Delta. $40 on American and United. $45 on JetBlue. $60 on Spirit and Frontier. Our trip pages price a checked bag each, round trip, at four times the one-way fee. For two people, that adds up on a two-night trip.
For three days, carry-on bags usually do the job, and it keeps the trip at the number you planned. Every budget counts here. Most long weekends don't look like what you see online.
Those are luxury-trip numbers, not average-trip numbers. Social media makes them seem common, but for most Americans they definitely are not.
The catch
A Friday-to-Sunday trip with two nights is short, and a late flight or a long drive can eat a whole evening. The holiday weekends that save you PTO are also when prices are highest, especially Thanksgiving and Presidents' Day, so the free day off can cost more. Mexico and Canada need a passport. Our totals leave out checked bags, food and transfers. All of these prices are what we found on Oct 15, 2026, and they will change before checkout.
What to do
- Pick your weekend first: a regular Friday to Sunday, or a holiday window like MLK weekend, Jan 15–18, 2027.
- Decide whether you'll drive or fly; San Diego and Palm Springs are short enough to drive from Los Angeles.
- If you fly, choose the nonstop and a departure time that gets you there with an evening still ahead of you.
- Check passport expiration dates before you look at Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta or Vancouver.
- Add up flights for two, the hotel with taxes and any resort fee before you compare places.
- Pack carry-on only, or add your airline's checked bag fee for each of you, both directions.
- Treat the booking site's checkout as the final price, since fares change after we check them.
