Long weekends from New York: three days, nonstop, no PTO

A long weekend from New York is worth it for the two of you if three things hold: a nonstop flight, a departure time that doesn't eat a day, and a place close enough that you get two full days there. Miami, New Orleans, Nashville, Charleston, Montréal and San Juan all fit. The hotel side is easy to pin down: we found two nights for two in Nashville at $262 and in New Orleans at $575, both taxes in. The flight from New York is the part to price for your own dates.

The holiday weekends that cost you no PTO

The typical American worker gets about eleven paid days off a year, so a weekend the calendar hands you is worth planning around. Coming up: Thanksgiving, Nov 25–29, 2026, which gives you four days, then MLK weekend, Jan 15–18, 2027, and Presidents' Day weekend, Feb 12–15, 2027.

Further out you have Memorial Day weekend, May 28–31, 2027, Labor Day weekend, Sep 3–6, 2027, and Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend, Oct 8–11, 2027. Thanksgiving week and Presidents' Day are price peaks, and Labor Day prices run high because nearly everyone has Monday off. The days just before and after a peak usually cost less. If you can leave a day early or come back a day late, check those dates first.

Nonstop and a sensible departure time protect the three days

Three days off leaves no room for a connection. A missed connection on a Friday night can cost you a Saturday, and that's a third of the trip. Every city on this page has nonstop service from the New York airports, so make nonstop the rule and drop any routing that isn't.

Times matter nearly as much. A Friday evening flight that gets in close to midnight still leaves you Saturday and Sunday in full, while a 6 AM departure after a short night can drain the first day. Before you pick the place, count how many full days you get there. If it's under two, pick somewhere closer.

Driving is the other option. A reading of travel surveys found 61% of people won't drive more than about 5 hours without stopping at a hotel, which puts a lot of places outside a three-day drive. Past that range, flying usually gives you more time there.

Miami and San Juan for warm weather in winter

MLK weekend is a good time to head south for 80°F sunshine without spending vacation days. Miami is the easy pick. We found four nights for two at citizenM Miami South Beach at $718 for Nov 19–23, 2026, and at Casablanca Residences Miami Beach at $684 over Thanksgiving weekend, Nov 27–Dec 1, 2026, taxes in, both found on Oct 15, 2026. Those totals came from trip pages that started in other cities, so add your own flight from New York.

San Juan gets you the Caribbean without the paperwork. Puerto Rico is part of the US, so US citizens don't need a passport, and the flight counts as domestic. The heads-up: Presidents' Day weekend is a winter peak for Caribbean sun, so lock in the flight early.

New Orleans and Nashville for food and music

Both cities give you two full days of eating and live music on a short trip. In New Orleans we found two nights for two at the Hilton Garden Inn New Orleans Convention Center at $575 for Oct 23–25, 2026, and at Le Meridien New Orleans at $590 for Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026, taxes in.

Nashville's hotel number is lower, with a catch. The Holiday Inn Nashville Airport by IHG came to $262 for two, two nights, Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026. It's an airport hotel, though, so every night out downtown means a ride. On a three-day trip, a hotel you can walk home from often costs more on the booking site and saves you time and rides once you're there.

Charleston and Montréal when you'd rather walk than ride

In forum posts weighing whether a pricier location paid off, 19 said yes and 9 said no. That's our own reading of public posts, not a survey, and it points the same way: on a short trip, being able to walk to things is a big part of what you pay for. Charleston's historic center works well on foot, and you can spend a whole weekend there on restaurants and walks without a car.

Montréal feels like a trip abroad with a short flight. Columbus Day weekend is fall-foliage season, so plan on crowds and book rooms early. The catch is the passport: Canada needs one, so check yours is valid before you price anything.

We stayed at Boardwalk specifically so we could come and go from Epcot and HS as we pleased and the views and location are well worth the premium for us.

What the total leaves out: the bag and the ride in

Our total for two covers the flights with taxes and fees, the hotel with taxes, and any resort fee the booking site lists. It doesn't cover checked bags, seat picks on basic fares, food, transfers or tickets.

The first checked bag, one way, per person: $45 on JetBlue, $35 on Delta, $40 on American and United, $60 on Spirit and Frontier. On a three-day trip a carry-on usually does the job, and then the fare you see is the fare you pay.

Plan the airport ride before you land. A set price and no line can be worth paying for when you only have three days.

It was $100 bucks round trip to the hotel and zero stress and zero wait. Little expensive, maybe but 100% worth it.

A good long weekend doesn't need a big budget

Travel feeds make pricey weekends look normal. Most aren't. Two nights in a well-reviewed hotel near the places you want to walk to, plus a nonstop flight at a good hour, is a complete trip. Whatever your budget, the aim is the same: two full days that feel like a vacation.

Those are luxury-trip numbers, not average-trip numbers. Social media makes them seem common, but for most Americans they definitely are not.

The catch

The holiday weekends that cost you no PTO are the ones everyone else wants too. Thanksgiving and Presidents' Day are price peaks, and over Labor Day flights and resort towns fill up months ahead. The hotel totals here came from trip pages that started in other cities, so they don't include a flight from New York. Prices change, and the booking site's checkout is the price that counts. If your dates can move, a shoulder weekend usually beats a holiday one on price.

What to do

  • Pick the weekend first, and check whether leaving a day before or after the holiday costs less.
  • Filter for nonstop flights only and drop any that land too late or leave too early to give you two full days.
  • Choose a hotel within walking distance of what you came for, not just the lowest rate.
  • Add up flights for two, the hotel with taxes and any listed resort fee to get the real total.
  • Decide on a carry-on or a checked bag, and add the airline's bag fee if you need one.
  • For Montréal, check that your passport is valid before you price anything.
  • Plan the ride from the airport to the hotel before you fly.

Three days is enough when you protect them: a nonstop flight, a departure time that doesn't cost you a day, a place within reach, and the total for two before you go.
