Anniversary trips: what makes one worth it for the two of you
An anniversary trip is worth it when the money goes to something the two of you will use every day: the view, the room, the walk out the door. In our reading of 116 public forum verdicts from US travelers, the view, the balcony or the room itself came up 27 times, more than any other reason. The special occasion came next with 26. One trip we found on Oct 16, 2026: two nights in Paris at $1,100 for two, flights and hotel included.
The view and the room led every other reason, with 27 mentions
We read public forum posts where travelers said whether a trip, or one part of it, was worth what they paid. This wasn't a survey. Of 116 verdicts with a US signal, 89 were positive, 23 were mixed, and 4 people said their only regret was not doing it. The reason people gave most often was the room: the balcony, the ocean view, the place you wake up. It showed up 27 times across 13 threads, and 51 times across all 415 positive verdicts we read.
That fits an anniversary well. You'll spend more time in the room than on a regular vacation: slow mornings, a drink before dinner, the last hour of the night. So when the choice is between a view and a few extras you'd barely notice, the view usually wins. In Santorini that could mean a room that looks out over the water. In Maui it's an oceanfront room you can hear from bed.
We stayed at Boardwalk specifically so we could come and go from Epcot and HS as we pleased and the views and location are well worth the premium for us.
The occasion explains why you're going, but it isn't a reason on its own
Special occasions, like honeymoons, proposals, milestone birthdays and bucket-list trips, came up 26 times across 23 threads, and 62 times across all the positive verdicts. People clearly feel that an occasion makes spending more okay. The posts that hold up best, though, tie the occasion to something concrete: a private vehicle on a safari, a quiet suite, a table with a view.
So start with the occasion, then ask what will actually make it feel like one. For one couple that's a long dinner in Paris after an afternoon of walking. For another it's a wine-country weekend in Napa & Sonoma where nobody has to drive far. Pick the one thing the trip is for, and spend on that.
Honeymoon safari with private vehicle is pure magic. Best decision we ever made.
Location means the walk you'll take twice a day
Location and convenience came up 19 times in the US verdicts and 38 times across all of them. The detail people kept coming back to was walking: walking to the parks, being close to everything, not starting each day with a ride somewhere.
On an anniversary, that's the walk to the beach in Tulum before breakfast, or the stroll from your Paris hotel to dinner and back. A hotel that costs a little more but cuts a daily transfer often pays off in time together. When you compare two hotels, look at how far each one is from the places you'll actually go, not only at the nightly rate.
An upgrade pays off only if you'll use the space
Upgrades, comfort and space came up 11 times in the US verdicts and 25 times overall. Time together, which belongs with this, showed up 14 times across all verdicts. The upgrades people were happy with gave them something to do: room to have dinner in, a place to rest that didn't feel crowded, a view they could still enjoy from inside.
Food and dining came up often too, 54 times across all verdicts. But those were mostly verdicts on one particular meal, not reasons the whole trip was worth it. Book the anniversary dinner, by all means. Just don't count on one meal to carry a trip.
a month out they offered an upgrade for next to nothing- and it was definitely awesome to still be able to watch the views from the room.
A short anniversary in Paris came to $859 to $1,100 for two
Here's what we found on Oct 16, 2026, for two-night weekends in Paris. Leaving from Munich on Oct 23–25, 2026, the flights for two came to $722 and the hotel, Virgina, to $326, for $1,100 for two in all. Leaving from Lyon on Oct 30–Nov 1, 2026, the flights were $514 and Hôtel Istria by Magna Arbor was $296, and the trip total came to $859 for two.
Those totals include taxes and fees, plus any resort fee the hotel collects at the desk when the booking site lists one. They're what we found at that moment, not a promise. The booking site's checkout is the price that counts.
A longer one: nine nights in Maui at $3,962 for two
On Oct 15, 2026, we found nine nights in Maui, Nov 14–23, 2026, leaving from Grand Rapids. The flights for two came to $1,372 and the Days Inn by Wyndham Maui Oceanfront to $2,237, for $3,962 for two in all.
That's a different kind of anniversary: less about one big night and more about long days together, an oceanfront room, and enough time to really slow down. If the view is what you're paying for, a long stay gives you more mornings to enjoy it.
What the total leaves out
The totals above cover flights and the hotel. They don't cover a checked bag, which each airline prices differently, or seat selection on basic fares, food, transfers or tickets. If sitting together on the flight matters for an anniversary, check the seat price before you compare fares.
Transfers are worth a look. A few people said paying for a ride with no waiting was the part that made the trip easy, and no-stress reasons came up 16 times across all verdicts.
There might be $100 fee involved now but it’s well worth it to save a lot of hassles.
The catch
The trips we found leave from Munich, Lyon and Grand Rapids, so from your city the flights, and the total, will be different. Paying more for the view only makes sense if you'll be in the room. On a trip full of day tours and late dinners out, put the money into the experience instead. And the totals don't include bags, seats, food or transfers, which can add up on a longer trip.
What to do
- Pick your dates first, then decide what the trip is for: one big dinner, slow mornings, or a long stretch of time together.
- Choose the one thing you'll use every day, whether that's the view, the balcony or the walk to the beach, and spend on that first.
- Compare hotels by how far they are from the places you'll actually go, not only by the nightly rate.
- Check whether the hotel collects a resort fee at the desk and whether the booking site shows it.
- Add a checked bag and seats together on basic fares before you compare flights.
- Book with the airline, the hotel or the booking site, and check the price at checkout before you pay.
For us, the occasion comes first, and the reason has to be something you'll use, like the view, the balcony or the walk to dinner. Tell us what the trip is for and when, and we'll pick the one that's worth it for the two of you, show why, name the catch and give the total before you go.
