Is an all-inclusive resort worth it? What travelers say
An all-inclusive is worth it for the two of you or for the family when the trip is a warm week by the pool and you want to know roughly what you'll spend before you leave. It's not worth it if you'd rather eat around town, or if tips, cabanas and upcharges would cancel out the price you thought was fixed. We read public forum posts from US travelers about trips they paid more for. Of 116 verdicts, 89 were positive, 23 were mixed, and 4 said their only regret was not doing it.
Of 116 US verdicts, 89 said it was worth it
These numbers come from our reading of public forum posts, not from a survey. Most of the posts aren't about all-inclusives. They're travelers deciding whether paying more for a trip was worth it: a better room, a resort close to the parks, a honeymoon. Even so, the reasons they give fit an all-inclusive decision well.
Among the US verdicts, the room and the view came up 27 times and a special occasion 26 times. Location and convenience came up 19 times, and so did food and drinks, though most of the food verdicts were about one meal and not the whole trip. Comfort and space came up 11 times, rest 6 times, and having everything handled 5 times. Across all 415 positive verdicts, with or without a US marker, having everything handled came up 16 times.
For a resort, the takeaway is that people remember the room, the occasion and the ease. The buffet comes further down the list.
overall, for the price, if you want a week in warmth on an ocean with decent food and a nice room, do it. We had no regrets.
The known total is the reason you'll actually use
The case for an all-inclusive is mostly about planning. You pay up front, the pool is a short walk from your room, and you don't decide where to eat three times a day. For a honeymoon, an anniversary or a family week with little kids, that matters more than the menu.
Couples planning a wedding say this outright. They want a trip where the spending is mostly settled before they get on the plane, so they can stop managing things for a week.
an all inclusive would be nice so we don’t need to worry about anything and know roughly what we’ll spend before leaving.
Food is where the reviews turn mixed
The negative verdicts we read often start at the table. Travelers on r/AllInclusiveResorts called a paid dinner and show not worth it, describing the food as mediocre and the show as short and uneven. Another called a photogenic floating breakfast a waste of money because the food wasn't served at a good temperature.
If eating out is half the reason you travel, a resort plan that covers every meal pays for food you won't enjoy much. In that case, a regular hotel close to town may suit you better.
I found that it was greatly not worth it and quite a waste of money. The floating breakfast, though very pretty, the foods were not at a good temperature
Tips, cabanas and upcharges aren't in the price
All-inclusive doesn't mean everything is included. Cabanas, specialty dinners, shows and tips can each come with a separate charge, and travelers are frustrated when they find out at the desk. One r/AllInclusiveResorts poster said a resort chain's whole model is to get you booked and then sell you a ton of upcharges.
Prices on extras can sometimes be negotiated, but it costs you time. One traveler got a charge down to $40 USD total for the group, not per person, and said it took some haggling and a little wasted time to get there.
We stayed at an all inclusive and when registering for the cabana they said the tip is not included. For what.. handing me towels?
Early November beats Thanksgiving week for weather and price
When you go matters as much as where. In Cancún, November scores 4 out of 5 in our month notes, with humidity dropping, skies drying out and good resort rates before the holidays. Prices jump sharply during Thanksgiving week, so aim for the first two weeks of the month. Punta Cana follows the same pattern: November is quiet and affordable early on, then spikes over Thanksgiving.
February scores 5 out of 5 in both places, but it's very crowded and expensive, especially around Presidents' Day. If you go in February, book your resort's signature dinners as soon as you check in. June scores 3 out of 5. In Cancún it's heavy humidity with fair prices. In Punta Cana it's hot and full of families, and you should check recent beach reports for sargassum seaweed.
Riviera Maya around Playa del Carmen and Montego Bay in Jamaica are also strong all-inclusive regions. We don't have month scores for them here, so check their season before you commit to dates.
What a Cancún hotel cost when we checked
To compare against an all-inclusive rate, here are the hotels on our Cancún trip pages for Nov 14–23, 2026, which is 9 nights. Hotel NYX Cancun came to $2,057 for two, found on Oct 16, 2026. Fairfield by Marriott Inn & Suites Cancun Downtown came to $898 for two, found on Oct 15, 2026. That's what we found on those dates, not a promise, and the booking site's checkout is the price that counts.
The flights on those pages left from airports you probably won't use, so price your own flights for two before adding them. Use the hotel figure as a starting point: add what you'd spend on food and drinks for the week, then compare that sum with the all-inclusive rate for the same dates.
The catch
A known total only works if it stays known. Checked bags, transfers, tips, cabanas and specialty dining usually sit outside the rate. Some resorts are built to sell you more once you arrive. You also give up eating around town, and the food reviews we read were the weakest part of the picture. Light eaters, travelers who drink little and anyone who wants to explore may pay for a lot they never use.
What to do
- Decide what the trip is for first: a honeymoon, a family pool week or a reset all favor an all-inclusive more than a food trip does.
- Choose your dates, aiming for the first two weeks of November instead of Thanksgiving week in Cancún or Punta Cana.
- Price a regular hotel for the same nights, add a realistic food and drink budget, and compare that with the all-inclusive rate.
- Read the most recent and the negative reviews first, and trust scores built on thousands of reviews over a few dozen.
- Check which dinners, cabanas, shows and tips cost extra before you pay.
- Add checked bags and airport transfers to your total, since neither is usually included.
- Book signature restaurant seatings when you check in during busy months like February.
