Cheapest weeks to fly: school breaks vs the week after

The cheaper weeks are the ones right next to the peaks, not the peaks themselves. That means early to mid-November instead of Thanksgiving week, MLK weekend instead of Presidents' Day, and the last ten days of April instead of spring break. On Oct 15, 2026, we found four nights in Miami from Cincinnati for Nov 19–23 at $1,200 for two, with flights and hotel, taxes included. The holiday windows themselves (Nov 25–29, Dec 19 to Jan 3 and Mar 6 to Apr 4) carry the highest fares and room rates of the year.

The cheaper days sit right next to the peaks

The price peaks on the US calendar are Thanksgiving week, the stretch from late December to Jan 3, Presidents' Day, spring break (mid-March to early April), Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day. Fares and hotel rates climb on those dates. The shoulder days on either side are where the totals come down.

The calendar of peaks is the same whether you leave from New York, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles or Miami. What changes from city to city is the fare on a given day. So start with the calendar, and then let the total for two make the call.

Thanksgiving: the first three weeks of November are the soft spot

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, Nov 26, 2026. It gives you a four-day escape without spending vacation days, but the Nov 25–29 window is when airfares and hotel rates hit their peak. The weeks before it tell a different story for the beach and park cities we track.

In Orlando, November is a gold-standard month, with light crowds and sensible rates for the first three weeks. Crowds spike hard over Thanksgiving week. The second or third week gets you the holiday decorations without the holiday lines. In Cancún and Punta Cana, the first two weeks of November bring high-season weather before the high-season prices. Both spike sharply during American Thanksgiving week.

If Thanksgiving week is the only time you can go, the data suggests flying out early on Thanksgiving morning or picking a place with holiday dining already planned. Booking a direct flight early matters more that week than any other.

What we found for Miami: $1,200 and $1,004 for two

On Oct 15, 2026, we checked two Miami trips around Thanksgiving. From Cincinnati, Nov 19–23 came to $1,200 for two for four nights: $394 for the flights and $718 for citizenM Miami South Beach. From Houston, Nov 27–Dec 1 came to $1,004 for two for four nights: $236 for the flights and $684 for Casablanca Residences Miami Beach, plus the resort fee the desk collects, which is counted in the total.

The second trip leaves the day after Thanksgiving and comes home on a Tuesday, so it skips the busiest travel days of the holiday. These trips are from different cities, so they're not a direct comparison. They're what we found on the date shown, not a promise. The booking site's checkout is the price that counts.

Christmas runs Dec 19 to Jan 3; MLK weekend is the calmer option

Christmas lands on a Friday in 2026, and the holiday window runs from Dec 19 through Jan 3, 2027. It's the most sought-after window of the year, and flight and room rates peak whether you're headed to the snow or a beach.

Three weeks later, MLK weekend (Jan 15–18, 2027) gives you three nights without the holiday pricing tag in our data. Presidents' Day weekend (Feb 12–15, 2027) is back at winter-peak prices. If the goal is winter sun in Cancún or Punta Cana on a long weekend, January's holiday is the one to look at first. Stick to a nonstop flight, and book the room early.

Spring break covers Mar 6 to Apr 4; late April doesn't

Spring break in 2027 runs from early March through Easter weekend, and Easter Sunday is Mar 28. Airfare and resorts hit their peaks across family weeks and the college hubs. In Orlando, crowds and fares spike from the second week of March through the end of the month as K-12 breaks roll through. In Cancún, college spring break makes the central Hotel Zone loud and expensive. Punta Cana stays near its winter peak rates all of March.

The fix is a few weeks later. In Orlando and Cancún, the last ten days of April are the sweet spot: dry weather, thinner crowds and softer rates. In Punta Cana, prices drop noticeably in the second half of April. One heads-up there: motorized water sports are restricted across the island during Holy Week.

Crowds ruin more trips than fares do

In our reading of public forum posts from US travelers, regret mostly came from a trip not living up to the hype, or from crowds or weather spoiling it. Fees and upsells come up as an irritant: the phrase nickel and dimed appeared 5 times, 4 of them from US posters. But fees were rarely the reason a trip wasn't worth it.

That's the other case for the week after. You pay less, and you spend less of your few days in lines. Where you stay counts too. A room with space to cook and unwind can keep a long park day from going sour.

Our suite at Old Key West made it so we could enjoy dinner together, do laundry, relax in a beautiful setting, and not feel crowded or irritated at the end of a long fun day.

About eleven days off a year: protect them

The typical American worker gets about eleven paid days off a year. Even so, 62% don't use all their PTO, and about 6 paid days go unused each year. Most trips end up as long weekends plus one bigger trip, planned around Thanksgiving, July 4 and spring break.

With three days off, choose a nonstop, sensible departure times and a place within reach, and count how many full days you'll actually get there. For example, on Oct 15, 2026, we found Las Vegas from Los Angeles for Oct 30–Nov 1 at $697 for two for two nights, with $440 for the flights and $230 for Harrah's Las Vegas. A short hop like that keeps a weekend from turning into a travel day.

The catch

The shoulder weeks cost you vacation days, and the holidays don't. Thanksgiving's four days are free time off, while a week in mid-November comes out of your PTO. For families, the cheaper weeks often fall on school days, so the week after may not be an option. The totals we found leave out a checked bag, seat picks on basic fares, food, transfers and tickets. Prices change, so the number at the booking site's checkout is the one that counts.

What to do

  • Write down the trip's purpose and the days you can actually take off before you look at a single fare.
  • Check whether your dates touch a peak window: Nov 25–29, Dec 19 to Jan 3, Feb 12–15 or Mar 6 to Apr 4.
  • Price the same trip for the week before or after, such as mid-November or the last ten days of April.
  • Compare the total for two, with flights, hotel, taxes and any resort fee, instead of the fare alone.
  • Add a checked bag and seat picks yourself if you need them, since they're not in the total.
  • On a long weekend, pick a nonstop with sensible times and count your full days there.
  • Book directly with the airline, the hotel or the booking site, and check the final price at checkout.

Protect the days you have: fly the shoulder days around the peaks and let the total decide. Tell us what the trip is for and when, and we'll pick the one that's worth it for you. We'll show why, name the catch and give you the total before you go.
