Sedona from Sacramento, Oct 16–18: $1,586 for two, all in

The verdict

Our verdict

Worth it, if

  • Highs of 63–71°F, mild weather for Cathedral Rock and Devil's Bridge
  • Panoramic Queen View room at Dreamcatcher Inn of Sedona, rated 7.8 from 955 reviews
  • $420 per person on Frontier, right at the typical fare

The catch: Frontier makes one stop and takes 5h 25m to Phoenix, Sedona is two hours north, and a checked bag is about $240 for two.

Worth it if the two of you want a hiking weekend and can live with a stop; skip it if a short trip needs a nonstop.

Worth it if you don't mind a stop: $1,586 for two covers the Frontier flights at $840 plus 2 nights at Dreamcatcher Inn of Sedona at $746, taxes and fees included. You leave Friday, Oct 16 and come back Sunday, Oct 18, with one stop and 5h 25m to Phoenix, not a nonstop. Checked bags, any resort fee and spending money aren't in that total.

Why now

October is Sedona's peak season, with the mildest hiking weather and the highest rates. The forecast for Oct 16–18 shows highs of 63–71°F and lows of 53–54°F, with a 13% chance of drizzle on Saturday and 9% and 6% on Friday and Sunday. The Frontier fare is $420 per person, the same as the median of the 9 earlier checks on this route, so it's a fair peak-season price, not a markdown. If you'd rather fly nonstop, Southwest was $599 per person, $1,198 for two, at 1h 50m. Add $746 for two nights at Dreamcatcher Inn of Sedona and the trip comes to $1,586 for two before bags and spending. We'd budget $760 for spending, which brings the weekend to $2,346. These are the prices we found when we checked, and they can change.

The kind of trip this is

This is a red-rock nature weekend: a hike early in the day, then a jeep ride or a spa in the afternoon and dark skies at night. It suits couples and friends who like being outside and don't mind a 2-night pace that's full but not rushed. Nightlife is quiet. The point is the trails, the views and the stars.

Questions readers ask

Is it worth it?

Yes, if a stop doesn't bother you. You get highs of 63–71°F in peak hiking season, and the $420 per person fare matches the median of our earlier checks. The trade-off is 5h 25m to Phoenix plus a two-hour drive, on a 2-night trip.

How much is the whole trip for two?

It's $1,586 for two, all in: $840 for the Frontier flights plus $746 for 2 nights at Dreamcatcher Inn of Sedona, with taxes and fees included. Checked bags (about $240 for two) and spending money are extra. We'd budget $760 for spending.

Do I need a passport?

No. It's a domestic trip from Sacramento to Phoenix, you pay in US dollars, and there's no time difference.

What is the weather like?

The forecast shows highs of 71°F on Friday, 63°F on Saturday and 67°F on Sunday, with lows of 53–54°F. Saturday has a 13% chance of drizzle. Friday and Sunday look overcast.

Is there a nonstop?

Yes. Southwest flies nonstop in 1h 50m, leaving at 11:10 AM and landing at 1:00 PM, for $599 per person, or $1,198 for two. That's not in our $1,586 total.

Is 2 nights enough?

It's enough for one big hike, a jeep tour or Slide Rock, and a night of stargazing. You land in Phoenix at 5:17 PM Friday, so your first full day is Saturday.
