Why now

Here are the numbers. $1,589 for two, all in, covers the Allegiant nonstop at $1,358 and 2 nights at Club Destin Condos at $207, and the $24 resort fee is already counted. A checked bag (about $200 for two) and spending money aren't included. We'd set aside $520 for the two days. The catch is the fare. At $679 per person, it's $29 above the $650 median of our 10 earlier checks on this route, and the lowest of those checks in the past 30 days was $571. October is also Gulf hurricane season. The forecast itself looks good: highs of 87°F Friday, 70°F Saturday and 75°F Sunday, with rain chances of 4% or less. If you can wait, we'd keep watching this route. If this is the only weekend you have, the trip still works.

The kind of trip this is

This is a short beach weekend: sugar-white quartz sand, clear green water and seafood by the harbor. It suits a couple or two friends who like an easy pace. You land late Friday, spend a full Saturday on the sand or on a boat, and get a slow Sunday morning before heading home. Families love this coast too, but two nights is tight with kids.

Questions readers ask

Is it worth it?

Not this week. The trip itself is good: a 2h 15m nonstop and a condo rated 8.3. But the $679 fare is $29 above the $650 typical, and our earlier checks found $571 within the past 30 days. If your dates can move, we'd wait.

How much is the whole trip for two?

$1,589, all in. That's $1,358 for the Allegiant flights plus $207 for 2 nights at Club Destin Condos, taxes and fees included. A checked bag is about $200 for two, and spending money is extra. We'd plan on $520 for the two days.

Do I need a passport?

No. It's a domestic trip from Grand Rapids to Florida, and you pay in US dollars. Just remember Destin is 1 hour behind Michigan.

What's the weather like?

The forecast shows a high of 87°F on Friday, 70°F on Saturday and 75°F on Sunday, with lows between 54°F and 66°F. Rain chances are 4% or less. October is still Gulf hurricane season, though.

Is 2 nights enough?

For a beach reset, yes, but it's tight. The flight lands at 10:32 PM Friday, so Saturday is your one full day for Crab Island or a fishing charter, with Sunday morning on the sand.

Which airport do I fly into?

This nonstop lands at Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS). Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) also serves the coast. Okaloosa Island is the beach strip closest to the airport.
