The weekend after

Sicily from Düsseldorf, Oct 30–Nov 1: $285 per person, round trip

The verdict

Our verdict

Worth it, if

  • $285 per person, $9 under the $294 typical fare
  • Highs around 71°F, and the sea is still warm for swimming
  • Leaves Friday at 7:00 AM, flies home Sunday at 10:40 PM

The catch: One stop and 12h 25m of travel for just 2 nights, the weather normals show rain Saturday and Sunday, and a checked bag is about $160 for two.

Worth it if you want a food, wine and history weekend and can handle a long travel day; skip it if you need a sure beach weekend.

Why now

At $285 per person, or $569 for two, the fare is $9 below the $294 median of our 5 earlier checks on this route, about 3% under. That's a fair price, not a rock-bottom one: the lowest we saw was $210. Late October is harvest time in Sicily, for grapes and pistachios, and the sea is still warm for swimming. The weather normals put highs around 71°F and lows between 50°F and 52°F. Friday looks overcast and rain shows up for Saturday and Sunday, so pack a layer and keep your plans loose. There's no time difference from Düsseldorf, and the island uses the euro. Think of it as a short taste of the east side: Etna, a winery, one long dinner. The prices were all-in when we found them on Oct 16, 2026, and they can change.

The kind of trip this is

A food, wine and history weekend, not a beach stop. With 2 nights and a long travel day, it suits a couple or two friends who like to eat well and are happy at a slow pace: one morning on the volcano, one market lunch, one sunset over old stones. Pick one corner of the island and stay put instead of trying to drive it all.

Where to stay in Sicily

We didn't price hotels for this weekend, so we can't name one here and there's no trip total, only the fare. The flight lands at Catania Fontanarossa (CTA), which makes the east side the easy choice. Taormina is the clifftop resort town with the Greek theatre and views of Etna, good if you want the sunset and the volcano from one base. Ortigia (Syracuse) is the baroque old town on its own island, with markets and sea swimming, and it's the pick for walking and eating. Palermo centro has the street food, the Norman palaces and plenty of chaotic charm, but it's on the far side of the island, so it fits a longer trip better. Cefalù and Noto / Val di Noto suit slower stays when you have more nights.

All hotels in Sicily for these dates

Where in Sicily

  • Taormina: Clifftop resort town with the Greek theatre and Etna views.
  • Ortigia (Syracuse): Baroque island old town with markets and sea swimming.
  • Palermo centro: Street food, Norman palaces and chaotic charm.
  • Cefalù: Beach town under a Norman cathedral, an hour from Palermo.
  • Noto / Val di Noto: Honey-coloured baroque towns and quiet countryside stays.

What to do in Sicily

  • Drive up Mount Etna and walk the craters, ideally on the overcast Friday before the rain.
  • Watch a sunset from Taormina's ancient Greek theatre.
  • Taste Etna wines at a winery on the volcano's slopes during the grape harvest.
  • Swim off Ortigia in Syracuse while the sea is still warm.
  • Eat arancini and cannoli in Palermo's Ballarò market if you're up for crossing the island.
  • Walk the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento.

Questions readers ask

Is it worth it?

Worth it if a long travel day doesn't bother you. The fare is $285 per person, $9 under the $294 typical, and October brings the harvests and a sea that's still warm. The downsides are one stop, 12h 25m of travel and rain showing in the normals for Saturday and Sunday.

How much is the whole trip for two?

Flights are $569 for two, all-in, as we found them on Oct 16, 2026. We didn't price hotels for these dates, so we don't have a full trip total. Plan on about $160 more for two if you check a bag.

Do I need a passport?

A national ID card is enough for this trip. If you don't have one, travel with your passport.

What is the weather like?

The normals for these dates show highs around 71°F and lows between 50°F and 52°F. Friday, Oct 30 is overcast, and Saturday and Sunday show rain, so bring a rain layer.

Is 2 nights enough?

It's enough for one area, not the whole island. You leave at 7:00 AM on Friday and fly home at 10:40 PM on Sunday, so you get two full evenings. Base yourself near Catania, in Taormina or Ortigia (Syracuse), and skip the long drives.

When do I get back?

The return flight leaves Sunday, Nov 1 at 10:40 PM and lands Monday, Nov 2 at 8:25 AM, so plan for a slow Monday morning.
